📋 What is Fioricet?
Fioricet is a specialized combination of acetaminophen (pain reliever), butalbital (a barbiturate that relaxes muscle contractions), and caffeine (a stimulant that improves blood flow). It is indicated specifically for the relief of the symptom complex associated with tension or muscle contraction headaches. Because of the potential for physical dependence, extended or repeated use is not recommended.
⚠️ Critical Safety Warnings
Overdose Warning: Acetaminophen overdoses can be fatal or cause severe liver damage. Seek help immediately if you experience nausea, upper stomach pain, dark urine, or jaundice.
- MAO Inhibitors: Do not use if you have taken an MAO inhibitor (such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, or phenelzine) in the last 14 days.
- Contraindications: Do not use if you have porphyria or have recently consumed alcohol, sedatives, or narcotic medications.
- Skin Reaction: Stop use immediately if you develop skin redness or a rash that blisters and peels.
🔍 Before Taking This Medicine
Ensure Fioricet is safe for you by informing your doctor of any history of liver/kidney disease, cirrhosis, stomach ulcers, or mental illness. Pregnancy Alert: Use during pregnancy may cause life-threatening withdrawal symptoms in the newborn. This medication can also pass into breast milk. Fioricet is not approved for use by anyone under 12 years of age.
⚖️ Dosing & Administration
Usual Adult Dose: 1 or 2 capsules every 4 hours as needed. Maximum Daily Limit: Do not exceed 6 capsules in a 24-hour period. Take exactly as prescribed and never share this medicine, as butalbital is a drug of abuse. Store at room temperature away from heat and moisture.
⚡ Side Effects & Precautions
Common effects include drowsiness, dizziness, a "drunk" feeling, and stomach pain. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medicine affects you. Avoid: Alcohol, diet pills, and other medications containing acetaminophen (APAP) to prevent fatal overdose.
🔄 Missed Dose & Overdose
If you miss a dose on a schedule, take it as soon as you remember, but skip it if your next dose is near. In case of overdose, call 1-800-222-1222 immediately. Symptoms may include confusion, tremors, seizure, or uneven heartbeats.
